Virtual Pool 3 has a stunning list of features, especially for a billiards game. There are 18 different games available, including three, six, eight, nine, ten, and fifteen ball, snooker, billiards, cowboy, and bowlliards; about the only type of game neglected is bumper pool. All have their own different rules and stipulations, and add a great amount of variety to the game. There is also a multitude of computer opponents on all skill levels, so finding a qualified adversary is easy. Quick play is the easiest and most direct way to play. Career mode is interesting, as you move up the ladder, hoping one day to reach the pinnacle of the sport. The only downside to the career mode is that you can only engage in one kind of match with each career: you can't play a game of nine ball, then switch to cushion billiards. There is Internet play through GameSpy Arcade, elimination tournaments, and the ability to try trick shots of your making. You can also customize the table properties, and even turn tracking on, much like in that episode in Quantum Leap to see where the balls will end up. On top of all this, the tutorial videos, hosted by the matriarch of the game Jeanette Lee, show you everything you need to know about play competitively, and even let you attempt the same shot Jeanette just hit. If it's in pool, it's in Virtual Pool 3.

Sound FX:
The smashing of pool balls together is superbly illustrated here. However, the ambient noise is especially engaging. Depending on the level that you chose, different sounds are appropriately echoed through your speakers. A couple of times, I turned my head to see the cat behind me, only to discover it was the game. The environmental noise strikes the perfect balance between not enough clamor and overdoing it. You won't grow tired of this racket, and, most importantly, won't even notice it, since it is so natural. The sound is well done.

Gameplay:
The staple of any pool game's gameplay is the physics model, and Virtual Pool 3 simulates real earth forces superbly. All the types of shots that you can attempt in a pool hall, you can emulate here. The control over the ball is unparalleled. Each shot consists of movement (if applicable), aiming, and shooting. You can, of course, do a whole lot more than this between shots. You can modify your stroke by raising the butt of the cue, applying English to spin the ball to your liking. You can even fine-tune your shots, to create that perfect game winner. The limits of real geometry are in place, however. If you are too close to a rail or another ball, you must alter your shot to accommodate the distorted angles that your pool cue must make. If you strike the cue ball just wrong, it may fly off the table. It would have been nice if objects around the room could be damaged from errant balls, but c'est la vie. Real pool players can apply their skills very easily to Virtual Pool 3, and you can even improve your own play, thanks to the fact that the physics model is so accurate and seamless.

Graphics:
The graphics are pretty good as well. They accurately display a pool setting, and the depictions of the table, pool balls, and billiard sticks (or cue, if you want) are very realistic. Everything is rendered in 3D, and you can rotate your view to any perspective you can imagine. Each different location has a unique background, but this never comes into play, and it is a static, albeit nice, backdrop. There are a couple of times I thought that I was playing pool, rather than a pool computer game. The graphics enhance the overall great gaming experience.

Alone in the Dark's attempts to break hardened video gaming cliches are obvious from the start. There are no inventory menus, ammo indicators, or health bars in either first- or third-person views--which you are free to switch between throughout. Your inventory is limited to what you can store in your rather capacious leather jacket, and it's accessed by looking down into it and seeing what you have stashed the various pockets and pouches sewn into the lining. Here you can not only see what items you have, but also work out how to combine them; if you've got a bottle of booze and a rag, you can make an instant Molotov cocktail, but add some tape and a box of ammo and you've got a much more powerful flying bomb.



The game opens in true survival horror fashion, with you waking up confused with no idea who you are or what's going on. Slowly the room comes into focus as you hear a conversation with references to various cultlike activities that are just coming to a head, but your vision soon blurs again--but this is corrected by simply closing your eyes. This mechanic continues for a small part of the first section as you slowly return to full consciousness, being dragged and ordered through an interior complex until you finally find a washbasin with a mirror, and start to get an idea of who you are and what's going on.

Zork: Grand Inquisitor (PC) | HF + ULD + RS | 1.13 GB

In the first of many clever references to its predecessors in the Zork series, Grand Inquisitor opens with a bald foppish dictator banning the use of magic throughout the Great Underground Empire. For gamers who plodded through the rather tedious Return to Zork and oddly humorless Zork Nemesis, the plot device is an obvious metaphor for what has happened to the longest-running series (20 years!) in computer gaming. Zork's signature wit and absurdity seemed to have been lost in the jump from text to graphic adventuring. Well, the magic may be gone from the land, but it has not vanished from the game. Grand Inquisitor is the best graphical Zork yet, and one of the most consistently entertaining adventures of the year.


The puzzles themselves are familiar Zorkisms. How do you retrieve the Coconut of Quendor from the soft palate of that sleeping dragon with some combination of inflatable toys, a gold tooth, and a bicycle pump? What exactly is the use of a magic spell that makes the color purple invisible? Of course, you will need to figure out how to make the Totemizer machine work in your favor and decipher a cryptic map of prison cells in order to free poor Dirk Benedict - the usual reverse engineering tasks of the computer adventurer. They are not tiresome or gratuitous, however. Grand Inquisitor succeeds in keeping the obstacles solvable and sensible (in a Zorky kind of way) within the fictional world.

Return to Krondor, like Betrayal at Krondor, is set in author Raymond E. Feist's swords-and-sorcery world of Midkemia. Both games provide strongly story-driven experiences, as evidenced by the fact that they are divided into "chapters," during which the plot is advanced in a very linear, predetermined fashion. Similarly, both games require you to use preset characters, each possessing a fully developed, distinctive personality, and determine party membership solely in response to plot developments over which you have no control. But while Betrayal at Krondor allowed you to develop your character in a variety of ways while exploring a vast gaming world and undertaking numerous subquests, Return to Krondor offers much more restrictive gameplay. Each chapter in Return to Krondor is set in a very discrete, confining geographic area (one room, in the case of two of the chapters), and most chapters have no subquests at all, forcing you to focus solely on your primary quest objectives.



The handful of available subquests are all interesting and do an excellent job at drawing you deeper into Krondor's world, and the main storyline is consistently compelling. In fact, you are likely to race through the already brief game because the lure of advancing the storyline by proceeding directly to the next key objective is difficult to resist. Still, even if you want to stop and savor the game's surroundings, your ancillary activities are primarily limited to opening doors in Krondor to encounter random human enemies or, in the sole chapter set in the not-so-vast wilderness, hopping along from territory to territory looking for random, mostly human, enemies to engage. The linearity of Return to Krondor will alienate role-playing game fans who prefer more open-ended experiences such as those offered by the Fallout games, but the strength of Return to Krondor's main storyline will certainly appeal to adventure game fans and other gamers wanting to play an often-compelling "interactive movie."

NBA Live 08 for Wii or PC is easily the weakest EA effort thus far on Nintendo's system, and that includes Madden, FIFA, Tiger, SSX, and even MySims; it's simply too thin. From the game's preliminary boot it may seem as though NBA Live has everything a Wii-owning b-ball nut would want, but it's simply not true, as the game lacks dynasty mode, create-a-baller, or any actual resemblance of true-to-life basketball strategy whatsoever. This may be a game "anyone can play like a pro" in, but if Wii isn't your first system, or if NBA Live isn't your premiere basketball experience you'll be hugely disappointed with what it has to offer.

NBA Live 08 is EA’s weakest attempt on Wii thus far, hands down. It lacks the polish, depth, or passion of any of the other motion projects had, removing full modes and options of the other console versions while also skipping on any of the expected PC additions. We’re not talking about the included Family Play mode, or the game’s Party Mode which includes two mini-games; we’re talking about seamless motion control that works in more ways than just a simple button press, PC-specific modes that truly make use of the console’s strong points (IR being one of those, something never used in NBA Live), and the intuitive “Learn Madden” equivalent mode of NBA Live, where players instantly are greeted with step-by-step tutorials and a range of training modes that familiarize them with the PC hardware.

Late 2006, Bully (PS2) was met by multiple complaints concerning the games nature, this forced Rockstar to change the title of the game to Canis Canem Edit (Latin for "dog eat dog") for European gamers. Unbelievably, this became a case of “any press is good press” and the game sold tremendously well in Europe compared to in the ’States. So, almost a year later and what has changed? Well, not much. Rockstar are trying their luck again, announcing the game as “Bully: Scholarship Edition”, and the exact same game is being released, this time on other platforms. Only updated graphics and new controls separate the two release games, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The original game was fantastic and is highly regarded as Rockstars finest accomplishment. These additions will only improve the game, which is a plus for any Wii owner.

As with any port, Rockstar have promised new content to feature in this addition, presumably as extra missions but possibly additional weapons or vehicles. The original game featured many schoolyard weapons ranging from slingshots to spud-guns. Vehicles were also available and gave you a choice of skateboards, bicycles and go-karts - only to name a few. As for characters, Bully’s cast leaves nothing to be desired, with over 100 characters sharing a total of 40,000 hilarious lines between them. Bully: Scholarship Edition is set to release in the US on November 20 2007.
